If new media, social media or web ‘2.0’ has something new to offer from the ‘old’ ways then it’s the way of sharing information. I think this is, besides the way of creating this information, indeed one of the key points that many before me have described about this new way of using the web. But what is this new way of sharing information all about? Is it indeed the ‘prosumer’ approach where everyone is creating and consuming content at the same time? If one would name sharing, editing and redistributing content as the key to social media, a virtue of this new way of sharing and consuming content then one neglects the underlying question; why this ‘works’.

communitySo, let’s say you have started with “web 2.0” and the decision has been made to start with setting up an online community. You end up with a nice website, reliable software, but little to no visitors! What has happened?! And other, maybe even more modest, projects of competitors seem to work a lot better. How do they do that? First of all you decide that the number of visitors doesn’t have to say anything about “Return on investment” in this case. On the other hand this of course doesn’t mean that you want to do without a good number of visitors.

Even bijspijkeren

Een kort bericht om duidelijk te maken dat ik eindelijk weer eens op een ander weblog schrijf. Natuurlijk ik schreef al weleens op “retecool goldmember”, maar dit is toch net weer even anders. Sjef Kerkhofs heeft me enige tijd geleden gevraagd of ik wilde schrijven voor zijn nieuwe initiatief “Bijgespijkerd” en ik heb die kans aangegrepen om een bijdrage te gaan leveren. Ik kom zelf nog wat moeizaam op gang qua aantal bijdragen. Mijn eerste bijdrage, over “play” op het werk  en wat dat kan betekenen voor online ontwikelingen, is ondertussen al een tijdje hier te vinden.
